Finding Work as an Immigrant

Finding work as an Immigrant

Last week I had the pleasure of running a Pathfinding and Career Workshop for Spirasi, an organisation that works with refugees. It was inspiring to see how many want to learn and succeed in their new home. But some are disheartened because they feel it is harder for them to find work in Ireland. Immigrants might have more obstacles to overcome, but they are not insurmountable. No matter where you come from, you always have options. It is just a matter of continuously improving your English and being creative in your job search by meeting as many people as possible and rework your CV to make you stand out. My father did it as a Spanish immigrant coming to Germany and I have done it here in Ireland. And if we can do it, so can you!

Dream Career or just a Hobby?

Hopefully by now you have an idea of your dream job or business. Now I want to make sure that you indeed love what you want to do. So, the next thing is to test your dream against reality. A lot of people find themselves in their dream career, only to realise that it is not what they thought. I know several people who became yoga teachers and belatedly realised that practising it full-time took all the fun out of it. Opening a scuba-diving school in Thailand might seem like an endless holiday, but it is very hard work and will leave you only little time to enjoy the sun and beach yourself. Beware of escape fantasies you have when you hate your job.

So, how can you test your dream? There are two ways:

How to overcome your Money Block

How to overcome your Money Block

Today I am going to write about one of the biggest obstacles that prevents people from following their dreams – the Moolah! This can be a major block for people especially if they have responsibilities (children, car, mortgage etc.) and cause anxiety. But as with the other obstacles (read about them in my earlier blogs), you need to take a closer look.

I don’t have the Qualifications

I don’t have the Qualifications

Last week we dealt with the limiting belief of I am too Old. This week I will talk about another common belief that frequently blocks my clients – I don’t have the qualifications.

I am too Old

I am too Old

One of the things people tell themselves why they cannot follow their dreams is “I am too old”. I told myself this when it came to my childhood dream of becoming a ballet dancer. I was not allowed to do ballet as a child. Even through my teens, I told myself that I was too old because I believed that you had to start ballet as a child to be successful. I imagined that even if I started then, I would be the oldest in a class full of children and would feel embarrassed.

It took me till the age of thirty to realise

I can’t do what I want to do BECAUSE…

Once you start exploring what you really want to do with your life, resistance will raise its ugly head. You will come up with 1001 excuses of why you cannot do what you want. How do you deal with that?

Love, Rock, Need

It took me several years and many exercises to figure out what I wanted to do. I now want to share with you a few exercises that have worked for me. Have you tried the Day in Heaven exercise yet? Congratulations if you got a full picture of your life from it. If not, here is another exercise for you.

A Day in Heaven

During my life, I have struggled several times with the question: “What do I want to do next?” And over time I learnt that it does not always matter if I don’t know exactly what I wanted. It was enough to have some ideas about what I want my life to look like to be able to move forward.

An exercise that I found in Barbara Sher’s book I Could Do Anything If I Only Knew What It Was has helped me several times to define my next career. A Day in Heaven also called Your Ideal Day will add more clues to the picture of you and your perfect work/life.
